Follow the star as it opens and softens. Let your breath slow, your exhale lengthen, and your body remember it is safe.
Your nervous system has two settings. The sympathetic branch runs fight-flight-freeze and ramps arousal up. The parasympathetic branch is the brake — it slows the heart and settles the body. Paced breathing is the P in the DBT TIP skill (Temperature, Intense exercise, Paced breathing, Paired muscle relaxation), a Distress Tolerance crisis-survival skill.
Slowing to about 5–6 breaths a minute, with your exhale longer than your inhale, gently activates that parasympathetic brake. It works fast — within seconds to minutes — to bring high emotion down a notch. The goal isn’t to erase the feeling; it’s to turn the volume down enough to think clearly and not make things worse.

1. Sit or stand comfortably. Let your shoulders drop.
2. Press Begin and let the star grow as you breathe in through your nose, and shrink as you breathe out slowly through pursed lips — like softly cooling soup.
3. Don’t force a big breath. Smooth and easy beats deep and strained.
4. Follow for a minute or two, then notice what shifted.
If the pace feels off, open Custom and shorten or lengthen it until it feels natural. A pace you can keep is better than a “perfect” one you can’t.
When you’re caught in emotion mind and can’t get out · when an urge spikes · when you’re overwhelmed and can’t think · before a hard conversation · to fall back asleep · or any ordinary moment you’d like to feel a little more steady. Practice it when you’re calm, too — that’s how it’s ready when you need it.
